Known as the “Gem of the Fox River Valley,” the village of Algonquin, 37,000 plus residents, is a rapidly, expanding community in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. This 130 year old village on the banks of the Fox River is home to many lovely and quaint antique shops, restaurants and also new malls that have just opened. Approximately 40 miles north of Chicago, Algonquin is a safe, family-oriented community with a wide variety of educational and recreational opportunities. The town maintains jogging and biking paths and a municipal pool site that offers swimming lessons. Its numerous parks are home to playgrounds, football and soccer fields, basketball, volleyball, tennis courts, picnic areas and even an ice skating rink! Algonquin offers a strong and renowned public education system for school-aged residents and there are several colleges and universities in proximity. Lake In The Hills: As the name implies, Lake in the Hills has lakes - four of them. Woods Creek Lake is the largest with two swimming areas - Indian Trail Beach and Butch Haggle Beach. Goose Lake, Willow Lake and Lake Scott are all shallow lakes. Goose Lake is utilized mainly for fishing while Willow Lake and Lake Scott are wildlife ponds. Lake In the Hills is home to a small airport as well as many small businesses. Population is just over 30,000.
Chicago Magazine ranks Lake in the Hills in the top five Healthiest Places to Live. In the October 2005 issue, 191 suburban Chicago communities were given scores on 15 qualities relating to health, safety, and the environment, searching for the healthiest places to live. Lake in the Hills was given the distinction of being ranked the 4th healthiest place to live amongst peer communities throughout the Chicagoland area.
Communities were graded on the elements below and received weighted scores according to the recommendations of experts in public health and epidemiology. Lake in the Hills scored highest in both the safety and environmental categories with overall rankings of 2nd and 6th respectively.
Environmental - air pollution sources, hazardous waste sources, water violations, industrial chemical releases, and open space.
Health - physicians per capita, premature mortality, low birth weights, incidence of cancer, fast food restaurants, and percent of population using public transportation.

Transportation
Roadways
Algonquin is seven miles north of the Northwest Tollway (I-90). Major regional arterials through the Village are Illinois Route 31, Illinois Route 62, and Randall Road. Commuters can access the tollway system either via ramps at Route 31, Randall Road, or Route 25. In addition, I-90 is accessible via Barrington Road.
Airports
Algonquin is located approximately 30 miles from O'Hare International Airport. With approximately 2,000 daily commercial flights, O'Hare offers direct flights to destinations around the world.
Neighboring Lake in the Hills Airport can accommodate light to medium twin-engine aircraft and many turboprops 24 hours a day. The airport also offers charter and rental services.
Railroad
Metra offers commuter stations in nearby Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, and Barrington. The train line provides service as far northwest as Harvard and southeast to Chicago.
Library Districts
The Village of Algonquin is served by several library districts. The Algonquin Area Library District serves the majority of the community. Sections of the Kane County portion of Algonquin are within the Dundee Township Library District. Areas along Haegers Bend Road (Glenmoor and Glen Oaks subdivisions) are within the Barrington Area Library District. The Huntley Area Library District serves Algonquin residents living west of Square Barn Road.
Education
Quality education is available to Algonquin residents. The majority of Algonquin lies within Community College District 509, served by Elgin Community College. A portion of Algonquin lies in Community College District 528, served by McHenry County College. Both colleges offer technical, vocational, and two year associate degree programs. Algonquin is also within driving distance of a number of major colleges and universities within the Chicago area as well as satellite campus locations.
